SOCIAL BUTTERFLIES

The current mood of greenwitch at www.imood.com

moon phases

Today was the day to get out and go to parties. We started the day with a 10:30am wedding. The wedding of A's teacher at school. Miss I. has been so generous as to move herself from Britian to upstate NY to teach A class at the local Waldorf school. This is an eight year commitment. She invited all the children in her class to her wedding. It is a very romatic story of the woman who moved across an ocean and her love followed her and married her one year later. They were married on the property of a school family in a field under a red tent. It was hot and sunny and a bit windy. The Hindu priest explained the ceremony as it progressed and spoke in both traditional and the english language.

And the bride wore red. This is one of my favorite parts. In most eastern countries brides wear red. I had to prepare A. for this. She was thinking in terms of fairytale weddings with white dresses and church spires.

A. has never gone to a wedding before today.

The Hindu ceremony was very nice and the priest was very gracious and practical.

The brides father is a Lutheran bishop.

The bride and groom took their first seven steps together before the assembled guests (look it up if you are curious).

Vegetarian buffet was catered by A's best friend' mom who opened a restaurant last year. The children played in the sunshine and pelted their beloved teacher with rice.

Then..................

We went to the last 45 minutes of Emily's birthday party. Culture shock. Emily goes to public school and her friends are very mainsteam. They give plastic gifts and eat lots of sugar. It was funny to watch after our previous social encounter.

Bonus is the afterparty. A. and Emily played together with some of Emily's gifts (mostly the spy related stuff which has been very popular this year and was the party theme ((we don't throw theme parties)) ). I got to hang out and talk with the adult guests who I have come to know over the past several years, mostly family and close friends of K. and her husband. Very relaxing for me and A. got to play with her friend Emily without the rambunctious energy of the mainstream kids.

This was all good practice for the impending school year.
